Teenage Fanclub - Live @ King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, Glasgow, Scotland, 22-05-1991
NOTE: Today marks the 30th anniversary of "Bandwagonesque" the
third album by Scottish band Teenage Fanclub. The album gave the band substantial US success when the single
"Star Sign" reached number 4 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks
chart, becoming their biggest hit in that country, with "What You Do to
Me" and "The Concept" also becoming top 20 hits on that chart. It started at the legendary CBGB club in New York. The members of
Teenage Fanclub were hanging out at a Matador Records event when they bumped
into Dinosaur Jr’s Don Fleming. Up to this point, the Glaswegian band had put
out one scruffy grunge album (A Catholic Education) that offered little
indication of the melodic genius they would go on to perfect. Fleming had a
simple question for the laidback Scots: “I notice you guys can do harmonies,
but you never do, why not? No-one else really does that.” It was a pivotal, career-altering moment, and in March 1991 the
Glaswegians went into Liverpool’s Amazon Studios with Fleming producing to
record a breakthrough album that began a run of sublime records recalling the
romantic power pop of The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Big Star and The Beatles. On July 28, 2017, Benjamin Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie released
"Bandwagonesque", an album covering all 12 tracks of the original
1991 release. He noted that it was "[his] favorite record by [his]
favorite band of all time." "Bandwagonesque" was voted 'album of the year' for 1991 by the
magazines Spin and Melody Maker, famously beating Nirvana's landmark album
"Nevermind". In 2013, NME ranked it at number 115 in its list of the 500 Greatest
Albums of All Time. The album is also included in Robert Dimery's book 1001 Albums You Must
Hear Before You Die. In this concert they played four "Bandwagonesque" songs. A must have! Concert divided into separate tracks by Live Bootlegs Blog.
